I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. Everyone needs help now and then, and people who reach out for support are demonstrating courage.  While taking that first step may not be easy, it often feels empowering.  You know you are on your way to feeling better and learning more about yourself.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

A mental health professional has the training and experience to  help you approach your situation in a new way.  They teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Therapy is also confidential so you won’t have to worry about others knowing your business.

    How long will it take?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to say since everyone’s circumstances are unique.  The length of time therapy takes generally depends on your goals, your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors driving you to seek therapy in the first place.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

Therapy involves an ongoing effort on your part. This means not only being actively engaged in sessions, but also thinking about or working on things in-between appointments.  While a therapist provides guidance, you are responsible for making the changes you seek.
